Varicose Vein SurgeryVaricose veins are known for drawing unwanted attention and pain to the affected legs. For many patients, laser removal procedures are often a viable option. However, for patients with more severe cases, a surgical procedure may be required.

Varicose Vein Recovery Time after surgery will vary on the intensity of the procedure. Though the removal procedure is relatively non-invasive, it will cause bruising and inflammation to form around the affected leg.

Varicose Vein Treatment

The procedure is relatively simple and quick! It involves a local injections that will numb the pain and calm the nerves. Next, the doctor will cut a number of small incisions to gain access to the affected vein. They will then cut off the blood supply to the vein before removing it through the incisions.

The procedure typically takes 30-90 minutes and the patient will be monitored for an additional 15-20 minutes upon completion of the procedure. All of this can be done from in the office.  It does not require any type of hospital stay or outpatient clinic visit.

Varicose Vein Recovery

Once the vein is removed, patients can expect:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Skin discoloration
  • Pain

If the doctor used stitches at the incision sites, they will either: dissolve on their own, or will be removed by a doctor 7 to 14 days after the surgery. It is crucial to be up and moving following the procedure.

Many patients worry that if the vein is removed, they will have insufficient blood flow to that region of the leg. This, however, is not true! Removing the vein will not cause a loss of circulation. Veins which are located deeper will maintain proper blood circulation and take over for the removed varicose vein.
