Many are bothered by the appearance of extra weight beneath their chin. Some may refer to it as a “double chin”, but healthcare providers refer to this fullness as submental fullness. Submental fullness can be caused by genetics, weight gain, or aging and affects both men and women alike. Even with diet and exercise, sometimes the condition won’t go away and can make you look older or heavier than you actually are.
There is a new treatment to help improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin. This treatment is called Kybella. Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable available to treat submental fullness. An alternative to surgery, this is a very effective treatment – 79% of those treated in clinical studies had improved satisfaction effective treatment with the appearance beneath their chin 12 weeks after their last treatment.
Injected into the affected area under the chin, Kybella destroys fat tissues. Once destroyed, they cannot store or accumulate fat again. Kybella’s active ingredient is called deoxycholic acid. This is a natural occurring molecule in the body that helps breakdown and absorb fat cells. Once injected and the cells are treated, the fat is removed from the area through the body’s natural metabolism.
The process typically takes about 15 – 20 minutes. Your healthcare provider will help determine the number of treatments needed based on the distribution of fat under your chin. Spaced no less than one month a part, up to six treatments may be administered to reach your desired results.
As with any medication or medical treatment, there are risks and side effects that must be considered when using Kybella.
