Are There Any CoolSculpting Side Effects?

If you have heard about CoolSculpting, you may be wondering if it is the solution you’ve been looking for to lose stubborn fat, and if there are any CoolSculpting side effects. One of the first things to understand about CoolSculpting is that this procedure is not a treatment for obesity. Rather, it can help eliminate small amounts of excess fat that refuse to go away with diet and exercise alone. As with any procedure, there is a potential for side effects with CoolSculpting. Some of the most common included the following.

CoolSculpting Side Effects Reported

  • Pulling, tugging, or a mild pinching sensation
  • Intense cold to targeted areas
  • Tingling, stinging, aching, or cramping at the treatment site
  • Numbness at treatment site during treatment
  • Temporary redness, swelling
  • Blanching, bruising, tenderness
  • Itching, skin sensitivity
  • Sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after treatment

Following a CoolSculpting procedure, the above are some common side effects. These side effects are usually temporary and generally disappear within days or weeks. Though rare, some additional side effects may occur. Because the procedure is non-invasive, you can typically resume normal activities of daily life immediately. Many patients have the procedure done on an extended lunch hour, and return to work on the same day after their CoolSculpting treatment is completed.

Other CoolSculpting Side Effects

A very rare but serious CoolSculpting side effect occurring usually in men undergoing the treatment is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia.  This is when fat cells in the treatment site grow larger rather than smaller. It’s not fully understood why this occurs. While it’s a cosmetic rather than physically dangerous side effect, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia doesn’t disappear on its own. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you. People with cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or paroxysmal cold hemoglobulinuria should not do CoolSculpting.

Because it is a non-invasive, non-surgical, virtually painless procedure, the CoolSculpting side effects are minimal and the treatment can be done in an afternoon, with no down time, and no scarring.
