What is CoolSculpting?

For those stubborn fat bulges that resist a healthy diet and exercise, CoolSculpting at Denver Vein may be the answer for you. CoolSculpting is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical treatment to eliminate fat using controlled cooling or “fat freezing.” Denver Vein offers the CoolSculpting procedure which targets fat cells underneath the skin using a gentle and effective, precisely controlled cooling treatment. Treated fat cells are crystalized (frozen) and then die. Over time, the body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead fat cells leaving a more sculpted look. The FDA has approved the CoolSculpting treatment for the abdomen, sides (love handles), inner thighs, outer thighs, and for the stubborn double chin.  Remember when searching for CoolSculpting, Denver Vein is certified and has undergone training to ensure that you get the best results.

How CoolSculpting Works

The CoolSculpting treatment came about after scientists at Harvard University observed that some children who ate popsicles got dimples in their cheeks. This led the scientists to determine the popsicles were freezing and eliminating small pockets of fat cells. Further study and research led to the theory that cold can target fat cells, without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue, leading to insight behind Cryolipolysis, the science of freezing fat and eliminating it, upon which the CoolSculpting treatment is based.

CoolSculpting, Denver Vein’s fat reduction procedure, is noninvasive and is the perfect treatment for getting ready for the spring and summer seasons.  During the procedure, CoolSculpting technology uses cold energy to treat the affected area, effectively targeting fat cells which are frozen and die off. Only the targeted fat cells are affected, leaving your skin, nerves, blood vessels, and other tissue intact. In the weeks that follow, your body naturally eliminates the dead fat cells through the body’s waste process.

The CoolSculpting fat-freezing procedure actually reduces the number of fat cells in the treated area by about 20% to 25%. The results from CoolSculpting at Denver Vein are notably different than losing weight. Losing weight does not change the number of fat cells in the body, which typically becomes a fixed number in our teenage years. Losing weight simply makes the fat cells smaller, and the number of fat cells does not decrease. With CoolSculpting, however, the fat cells in the treated area are eliminated over time, and those treated fat cells are gone forever, leaving a more sculpted you!

For CoolSculpting, Denver Vein is a certified practice.  This means that we have been through the proper training to perform the procedure. We have a comprehensive understanding of the technology and how the procedure works.  For more information on CoolSculpting, to view our CoolSculpting Specials or to schedule an appointment, call The Denver Vein Center today at (303) 777-8346.

Facial Veins

Facial veins, like spider veins or broken capillaries, are usually harmless, but may pose a cosmetic concern for those that have them. The red or bluish thread-like veins can appear anywhere on the face, but typically on the nose, cheeks, and forehead. Though this issue can affect anyone, it is most commonly seen in fair-skinned women and appear around age 40.

Facial Veins

The two most common causes for facial veins are genetics and sun exposure, which can be more intense for those living in higher altitudes, like Denver residents. Other causes can include aging, hormones, trauma or pressure, and rosacea.

If you suffer from broken facial capillaries affecting your skin and appearance, there is help. Denver Vein Center offers vein removal treatments for the face. Facial veins can be removed very effectively through two means, sclerotherapy and laser therapy.

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medicinal procedure that has been around for decades. It eliminates veins through the injection of a solution directly into the vein. The solution causes the vein to collapse by irritating the lining of the blood vessels, and reroutes the blood to healthier veins. Eventually the collapsed blood vessel scars and is it absorbed into the tissue, fading from view.

Laser vein removal has also been around for many decades, and with each year come greater advances in technology to help treat a variety of skin conditions. For facial veins, a focused beam of light targets the vein, heating it up, and destroying it. Similar to sclerotherapy, the scarred vein is reabsorbed into the surrounding tissue and eventually disappears.

If you would like to get rid of those unsightly broken capillaries on your face, Dr. Norton and her talented team at Denver Vein Center can determine which treatment is best for you. For more information about our facial vein treatments, call us Center at (303) 777-8346, and find relief today.

Compression Stockings: Uses & Benefits

While compression stockings or socks have a clear medical benefit for those at risk of blood clots in the legs, they are becoming more and more popular these days. It’s not uncommon to see athletes, like runners or basketball players, wearing them to facilitate blood flow. Pilots, aircrew members, and passengers on long-haul flights wear them to reduce the risk of blood clots and combat swelling from inactivity.

How Compression Stockings Work

Compression stockings help increase circulation by forcing blood flow from the feet back toward the heart. Blood in the body is subject to the effects of gravity, like everything else, and using compression stockings promotes blood flow.

Many people can benefit from their use, but for those with serious medical issues such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), the benefits are great. People with venous leg ulcers, leg swelling, and those with circulation problems can also benefit from compression stockings.

The benefits of compression stocking:

  • Improves blood flow
  • Prevents blood from pooling in the legs
  • Decreases the risk of blood clots
  • Reduces leg swelling
  • Improves the flow of fluid to cells (known as lymph)
  • Reduces muscular and skeletal stress
  • Improves symptoms of vein disease

Compression stockings also help reduce the symptoms of varicose veins and spider veins, such as fatigue, swelling, itching, burning, and leg cramps. They are particularly helpful for pregnant women. With swelling and varicose veins effects from pregnancy, compression stockings can come in handy by keeping blood flow steady and squeezing the areas of the leg, feet, and ankle where buildup of fluid in the tissue can occur.

Other groups that can benefit from compression stockings include those who spend a lot of time on their feet. Nurses, teachers, servers, tellers, flight attendants and others who stand all day and are subject to leg fatigue can gain a measure of comfort from their use.

All insurance companies require patients to trial compression stockings prior to treatment for varicose veins. The range of time required is anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months. Anyone interested in seeking treatment for varicose veins, should trial compression stockings first.

Because of all the medical benefits, and the comfort that they can provide, Denver Vein Center now sells Medi brand compression stockings. To learn more about the type and thickness of compression stocking that is right for you, call Denver Vein Center at (303) 777-8346, and find relief today.

Meet Our Staff

There are several things that set the Denver Vein Center apart from our competition. Among them are the length of time our staff has served our many patients, the education our staff members have acquired and the heart with which they serve.

Longevity. Three of our five staff members have been with the Denver Vein Center for over 10 years. Two others have been with us for over three years. We know our patients and are invested in their outcomes. This is especially important with the cosmetic part of the business. We connect with our patients, know what they want and don’t have to be re-educated every time they come in.

Education. We have two Registered Nurses (RN) and one Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) that do all of our cosmetic procedures. Having a qualified healthcare professional doing these procedures is very important to us. One of our nurses is a national trainer for Allergan, the makers of Botox, Juvederm & Voluma, three products we utilize in our clinic. She has also trained other nurses and technicians on fillers and lasers. Another nurse has been with us for 10 years and has trained our other nurses as they started with us. Due to their nursing background, these valued staff members are better able to assist our patients, both medical and cosmetic, with their individual needs.

Heart. This is why the Denver Vein Center staff is so great. We believe our staff is the reason for our success. It starts with Dr. Denise Norton, who is not only a qualified physician, but is also kind and thoughtful, and truly cares for her patients. It’s a rare quality, and one essential in a good surgeon. The rest of our staff are friendly, thoughtful, dedicated, and caring, always putting our patients’ needs first.

Obagi Elastiderm Eye Cream for Younger Looking Eyes

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. When people look into your eyes, you want them to focus on you, not on fine lines and wrinkles that may be present in the skin surrounding your eyes. Eye wrinkles are caused by reduced collagen and elastin in the skin as we age, but fine lines and wrinkles can appear much earlier than you might think. Sun damage, smoking, squinting, surgery, illness, injury, even smiling can cause our skin to age prematurely. Wearing sunglasses to prevent excessive squinting can help, but there’s more you can do to help ward off fine lines and wrinkles in the skin around your eyes.

Obagi Medical Products are carefully designed to help minimize the appearance of premature skin aging, sun damage, acne, skin damage, hyperpigmentation and more. Obagi Elastiderm Eye Cream is a lightweight eye cream that is clinically proven to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes for firmer, more youthful-looking skin. Elastiderm Eye Cream is a leader in the physician-dispensed eye cream market.

Elastiderm contains a proprietary bi-mineral complex along with malonic acid, combined to deliver tighter, smoother looking skin. These clinically proven ingredients, paired with penetrating therapeutics, work together to help rejuvenate the look and feel of that delicate skin around the eyes. In a 9-week study involving over 30 subjects using Elastiderm Eye Cream two times per day, 97% of test subjects reported positive changes in the texture of the skin around their eyes.

One of the many benefits of Obagi Elastiderm Eye Cream is that it has no expiration date! When you need the youth-enhancing results this eye cream can deliver, it will be there for you. Because it never expires, this age-defying eye treatment doesn’t stick around on our shelves for long.

Bulging Hand Veins

Admired, and even rewarded, in the competitive sport of body building, bulging and prominent veins are not something that most want to see on their hands. However, with age, many people’s hand veins become more prominent, making them look “old”. These bulging hand veins with their tortuous appearance can betray one’s age, and even make them look older than they are.

One of the body parts that seem to age faster than the others, hands whose veins do succumb to prominent bulging are considered unsightly by many afflicted with the condition. In a large majority of cases, conspicuous hand veins are normal, healthy veins that become more noticeable with time due to three age related factors:

1) the loss of skin and vein wall elasticity, 2) loss of subcutaneous fat and collagen, and 3) water content of the hand tissue. These factors result in a bonier appearance, with bulging veins that set off the bluish or purplish lines on the back of your hand.

For those of you that are not happy with bulging veins, there are solutions available. A couple of ways to treat hand veins include sclerotherapy and the use of dermal fillers.
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that permanently eliminates a vein. Via a thin needle, a chemical (sclerosant) is injected into the vein which damages the vein’s inner lining causing it to collapse.

A temporary solution to reducing the prominence of hand veins is through the use of a dermal filler. A dermal filler is a naturally-derived or synthetic material that is injected into the skin for the purpose of plumping up the skin. Often used to treat facial wrinkles, it is also used to create fullness on the back of the hand in order to reduce the prominence of veins that appear larger when the hand’s skin loses subcutaneous fat and collagen due to aging. Some dermal fillers can last a year or more and even stimulate the production of collagen.

Though not typically indicative of a medical problem, swollen hand veins can be a symptom of vascular disease. If you notice these veins are larger or more visible than before, do discuss the issue with a medical specialist.

Juvederm Voluma XC for Full Cheeks

Age related skin concerns don’t just extend to wrinkles and lines. Over time, cheeks may flatten out, sag, or just lose that fullness and glow that comes with youth. This is a natural loss of volume in the cheek area, referred to as age-related midface volume loss. This loss could be the result of low levels of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, as it is this substance that helps create the fullness that comes with youthful looking cheeks and skin. Rest assured, though, just because age can impact your skin’s fullness and healthy look doesn’t mean you don’t have options to regain that youthful appearance. Juvederm Voluma XC, by Allergen, was designed to create full, contoured cheeks and restore that youthful look and vitality.

Voluma XC is the first and only FDA-approved injectable gel that restores your cheeks’ natural plumpness and gives you beautiful, natural-looking results. The Voluma XC treatment gives your skin just enough volume to contour your face and subtract years from your appearance right away. Designed specifically for the cheek area to make them appear more plump and youthful, this gel-like injectable instantly adds volume just below the skin’s surface. The treatment is quick, convenient, and a long lasting approach to skin care – it can last up to two years with optimal treatment. There is absolutely no down time, and you can immediately carry on with your day business as usual right after treatment.

Patients that took part in clinical studies of Juvederm Voluma XC reported looking up to five years younger, six months after treatment. When treated again after two years, patients needed less of the injectable to achieve their desired results.

For more information about this revolutionary injectable gel designed specifically to keep your cheeks looking youthful and healthy, call Denver Vein today at (303) 777-8346.

Kybella Treatment for Your Chin

Many are bothered by the appearance of extra weight beneath their chin. Some may refer to it as a “double chin”, but healthcare providers refer to this fullness as submental fullness. Submental fullness can be caused by genetics, weight gain, or aging and affects both men and women alike. Even with diet and exercise, sometimes the condition won’t go away and can make you look older or heavier than you actually are.

There is a new treatment to help improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin. This treatment is called Kybella. Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable available to treat submental fullness. An alternative to surgery, this is a very effective treatment – 79% of those treated in clinical studies had improved satisfaction effective treatment with the appearance beneath their chin 12 weeks after their last treatment.

Injected into the affected area under the chin, Kybella destroys fat tissues. Once destroyed, they cannot store or accumulate fat again. Kybella’s active ingredient is called deoxycholic acid. This is a natural occurring molecule in the body that helps breakdown and absorb fat cells. Once injected and the cells are treated, the fat is removed from the area through the body’s natural metabolism.

The process typically takes about 15 – 20 minutes. Your healthcare provider will help determine the number of treatments needed based on the distribution of fat under your chin. Spaced no less than one month a part, up to six treatments may be administered to reach your desired results.

As with any medication or medical treatment, there are risks and side effects that must be considered when using Kybella. Consult with your doctor and healthcare providers to learn about these risks and side effects, and other requirements necessary to determine if you are a good candidate for the treatment.

Join us on Thursday, August 18th from 11:30 – 1:00, when Denver Vein Center will be hosting a lunch and learn session to provide you with more information about Kybella, and if it’s right for you. Call us at (303) 777-8346 for more details.

Important Things to Know About Sunscreen

Age Spot Removal

It is estimated that one person out of every five will develop skin cancer. That’s a pretty significant number and a very important reason to use sunscreen while out and about. But, just any sunscreen won’t do the trick. In a 2011 ruling the FDA has cracked down on marketing gimmicks and now require sunscreen labeling to be more detailed and accurate.

Ultra Violet (UV) radiation from the sun and artificial sources (such as from tanning beds) is classified as a carcinogen (cancer causing substance), by both the US Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization.

There are two kinds of rays and both of them can be dangerous.

  • UVA rays (or aging rays) can pass through windows and can prematurely age your skin and cause wrinkles and age spots.
  • UVB rays (or burning rays) are blocked by window glass and are the primary cause of sunburn.

Sunscreen labeled “Broad Spectrum” means it will protect against both UVA and UVB rays, and with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of 15 or higher it can not only protect against sunburn, but if used as directed with other sun protection measures, it can reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.

If a label doesn’t indicate “Broad Spectrum” and has an SPF of less than 15 it must have an alert stating it may only help prevent against sunburn and will not protect against cancer and premature aging.

SPF values higher than 50 can only be listed as “50+”, as ratings higher than SPF 50 show no significant added benefit and include more chemicals. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen with at least a SPF rating of 30.

No longer can manufacturers claim sunscreen is “water proof” or “sweat proof”. If the sunscreen has a water resistant feature, it must be labeled as either “Water Resistant” (meaning it may be effective in the water for up to 40 minutes) or “Very Water Resistant” (meaning it may be effective in the water up to 80 minutes). After the indicated time it must be reapplied.

As well, manufacturers cannot identify these products as “Sunblocks”, as no application can effectively block 100% of the sun’s UV rays.
